How to Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer: 8 Florist-Approved Tips

A beautiful bouquet is a small daily joy — and with a little care, you can stretch that joy from a few days into a week or more. Fresh flowers are living things, and in the UAE's warm climate they appreciate a bit of extra attention. Here are eight simple, florist-approved tips to keep your blooms looking their best.

1. Trim the stems before you start

Before placing flowers in a vase, cut about 2–3 cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. The angled cut gives a larger surface to drink through and stops stems sitting flat against the vase base. Re-trim every couple of days for the best results.

2. Use a clean vase and fresh water

Bacteria are a bouquet's worst enemy. Always start with a spotlessly clean vase and fill it with fresh, room-temperature water. Cloudy water is your sign that it's time for a change.

3. Feed them with flower food

If your flowers come with a sachet of flower food, use it — it contains the right balance of nutrients and antibacterial agents. No sachet? A pinch of sugar with a tiny drop of household bleach in the water can help in a pinch.

4. Remove leaves below the waterline

Any leaves sitting under the water will rot quickly and speed up bacteria growth. Strip them off so only clean stems sit in the water.

5. Keep them cool and out of direct sun

This one matters most in the UAE. Flowers last longest in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, air-conditioning vents and any source of heat. A bright but shaded corner is ideal — and moving them somewhere cooler overnight can add days to their life.

6. Keep them away from the fruit bowl

Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers age faster. Keep your bouquet well away from the fruit bowl and it will thank you.

7. Refresh the water every couple of days

Change the water every one to two days and give the vase a quick rinse each time. While you're at it, re-trim the stems and remove any blooms that are past their best so they don't affect the rest of the arrangement.

8. Give special blooms special care

Some flowers have their own preferences — roses love a deep drink, tulips keep growing and bending toward the light, and hydrangeas can perk up with a full-head soak if they start to droop. When in doubt, cooler and cleaner is always the safe answer.

Caring for cakes, balloons and plants too

Sending more than flowers? Keep cakes refrigerated until about an hour before serving, keep foil balloons out of direct heat, and give plants bright indirect light and a drink when the top of the soil feels dry.
